In the United States there are approximately 1.5 million nonprofits, making up the 3rd largest workforce. Nonprofit organizations, just like other businesses, face many kinds of risks in their day-to-day operations. Additionally, most nonprofits use volunteers, which exposes them to risks for-profit businesses don't face. Obtaining the right insurance for a nonprofit can mean the difference between operating long-term or having to abandon their mission after a loss.
If your organization is categorized as a 501(c)(3) you fall under the nonprofit umbrella. The most common are public charities, private foundations, and private operating foundations. These include:
All of these organizations need to carry insurance.
General Liability (GL) Insurance - This insurance policy protects the nonprofit in the case of a person claiming they were injured or suffered property damage due to the nonprofit’s negligence. A GL policy also includes coverage for advertising injury. This coverage protects the insured from claims of defamation (libel and slander) as well as copyright infringement. The GL policy also pays for defense costs of covered claims, even if the claim later proves to be false.
Some of the more common types of insurance policies include:
Directors and Officers Insurance:
Directors and officers liability insurance (also referred to as D&O insurance), covers directors, officers, and board members from liability if a lawsuit is brought against the nonprofit organization. This includes—but isn't limited to—accusations of fraud, misconduct, malpractice, or financial mismanagement.
Professional Liability Insurance: Also known as errors and omissions coverage, professional liability insurance is essential if the nonprofit provides professional services. Professionals provide services and advice that require specialized education, judgment, and skill. A Professional Liability Policy provides protection for a wide array of persons including therapists, counselors, nurses, teachers, clergy, and other volunteer professionals.
Commercial Property insurance: Nonprofit organizations can't afford to replace property or products stored within their premises if they're damaged or destroyed by fire or natural disaster, or if they're stolen.
Commercial Auto insurance:
If the nonprofit organization owns a commercial van or vehicle, of if volunteers use their personal vehicles to conduct the nonprofit’s business, then commercial auto coverage is critical.
Volunteer Accident Policy: This is often covered under general liability insurance. However, if the nonprofit frequently works with volunteers, consider adding this policy for further protection. It can help cover minor medical expenses if a volunteer is injured on the job—no matter who is at fault.
Cyber Liability Insurance: Sometimes referred to as 'Data Breach' coverage, is needed if your organization handles private consumer information or data. This policy provides coverage if your computer systems are hacked, infected with malware, or employees make an error.
Special Events: Nonprofit organizations are well known for hosting special events; and most venues will ask for proof of insurance coverage before granting access to their event space. Also, if alcohol is served, host liability alcohol coverage can be added.
Workers' Compensation Insurance: If you hire employees to work for your nonprofit, Workers' Compensation insurance is a necessity. This policy provides coverage for medical expenses and lost wages in the case of employee injury or illness, regardless of fault.
Just like any other business, the cost of a nonprofit's insurance will depend on the unique risks it faces. Some factors taken into consideration when calculating costs include:
